My main gripe with this phone is the touch screen. It is not sensitive enough. There is a lag when you try to text or choose things from the menu. The Screen looks lovely though and all my films look great on it. It is not a very finger friendly phone, I have to use the stylus a lot more than I would like. I hope the HD2 is better; I'll wait for the reviews before I buy though.

I've had this PDA now for just under 12-months and in that time it has only worked fully for about 2-months. During the course of my ownership SMS-Messaging has failed; on-line video rendering has failed; it has burned out two MicroSD Cards and required 2-battery replacements.



While the device is primarily intended for a touch-screen market; the sensitivity of the resistive screen (or lack thereof) can make some interactions very difficult without having to rely on the provided stylus. But, be warned - even with the lightest of touches with the supplied stylus; the screen is prone to scratching and will require the regular replacement of screen-protectors.



I don't doubt there are many delighted owners who have thoroughly enjoyed having this bright and shiny new toy; however, it's worth bearing in mind that there remain several question marks over the performance of some elements of its Operating System and general functionality. Windows Mobile 6.1 is problematic and while HTC attempts to mask those problems with their own proprietary interface; only so much can be done to make a silk-purse out of a sow's ear.



When it does work; it can be a real asset - but its reliability falls very much short of what one would expect for device in this price-range.



Of particular note is HTC's woeful Customer Support. In each of the faults I've listed above; HTC's only recommendation is to try a Soft Reset (which failed each and every time) followed by a Hard Reset, which unless you're very careful to back-up all your data and personal settings you will lose and can take in one instance up to 5-hours to reset. HTC seem to regard the proposition of replacing a clearly defecting piece of equipment as beneath them (I've been told repeatedly that it is not "policy" to replace their devices) and have insisted that the device go in for repair. Each time it has been returned to them it has come back (between 3 to 6 weeks lead-time) with the fault unresolved. What they must imagine you're supposed to do for mobile telephony while they're supposedly fixing the problem is anyone's guess.



For a device that allegedly thrives on its adaptability, connectivity and personal customisation; it promises a great deal... However; over time I have found it singularly one of the most frustrating pieces of kit I've ever laid my hands on and that frustration has only been compounded by HTC's ambivalent, incompetant and, dare I say it, complacent approach to Customer Relations.



Buyer beware - HTC's bid for mobile supremacy with this device has its flaws and in my experience; that bid comes very much at your expense - both in terms of money; time and inconvenience. HTC had the recipe for an awesome meat pie; then made it with dog-meat... A real shame.

First of all i would like to point out that is a brilliant product, but beware, buy a case with it! i've had this phone coming up for a year now and it'sbeen sent back twice. the first time was in dubai, wild wadi and i dropped it out the locker. the screen shattered rendering it useless! it cost 140 quid to repair so just do the right thing and buy a silicone case for it! i've dropped quite a few times befare the fatal accident, but this time it landed wrong! after that incident, i brought a case. the second time was when the phone suffered from water damage, however i am pleased to report that it didn't cost me a penny! what i think happened was the case collected water and then soaked the mobile! oh well!

as for the phone, well, i love it! windows mobile is a bit fiddly at first, but i got used to it fast. it does everything it is claimed to do quite well. the camera isn't quite as impressive as the phone, however. 99% of my pics were blurred. also, the accelerometer (thing that makes the screen rotate to the way the phone is being held) doesn't work on most apps. it works on opera and album, but doesn't work on excel which i find quite annoying. the screen is very large and the resolution is great. tied up between this and an iphone? well, iphone is more of a play phone. it isn't really a 'serious' phone. i got this because; the camera is higher resolution, work with microsoft word, excel and powerpoint and has a bigger screen.

I bought this phone after a lot of research and reading all the reviews on it. I am a mobile engineer and I had a Nokia N96 plus a HP 114 PDA and a Garmin Mobile 20 Satnav System and I was looking to incorporate all into one device.

I love this HTC phone. It just looks so good and after having it in full use 6 days a week it does perform so well. I bought the new TomTom 8 with European maps for the device and it works a treat. This device has taken all the hassle out of my communications and running my database of clients and organising my diary which is essential to my daily running.

I was concerned after reading one review which is on the Amazon site but I can tell you that I have not found this to be the case. On the contrary, I found the touch screen to be brilliant and easy to use. As for locking the device, simple, you just press the on/off button for a fraction of a second and the device goes into lockdown. All you have to do to unlock is repeat the process and you phone is back.

In short. This is a tremendous phone. Its well designed and put together and performs superbly. I just can't say enough about this phone. I have been very pleased with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone.

This is the third item I have had in recent years working on a version of Windows mobile, this is by far the best, I know Windows mobile is not well recieved by many reviewers but if it is what you need to do your business having the touch flo front page on the HTC is an enormous improvement on usability, the features and functions on this phone, if phone is not too simplistic a word for this bit of technology, are fantastic, the large screen is very clear and easy to read, the input from the on screen qwerty keyboard is very easy to use even with my old fat fingers. I highly recooment this unit for anyone needing a good mini pc and phone.

The HTC tattoo is a great mobile phone! I am a total new comer to touchscreen/internet/all singing-dancing phones having owned a motorola pebble for many years (finally in retirement!). The tattoo looks great and the touchscreen is so easy to use - its kind of like having four different computer screens that you seamlessly scroll between. The screen is very bright and colourful, and combined with numerous features, you can set this up to your own needs and tastes, thereby ending up with a phone that suits your needs perfectly!

There are a few points however that might be improved but in no way should these put you off considering the purchase of the tattoo:

the camera is pretty poor to be honest - its so blurry and the definition is not good. however, with patience an ok shot can be taken, but only if the subject is standing perfectly still! However, being able to upload pictures of your friends and contacts so that they appear on the screen when they ring you is cool.

The speaker distorts at high volumes.

Typing in a text can be a bit of a fiddle, although by tilting the phone on its side you get a bigger keyboard.

The battery life isn't great - the power drains quite quickly, so always make sure you have the power cables handy! I have found though that in practice I just plug mine in to the PC at the end of each day. So, no great deal really.

I think this phone is definately worth considering - its certainly caught the attention of many of my friends and colleagues and I love using it. You can buy screen protectors for the phone, but I haven't done so yet - I did purchase a small grey and black "sock" from an orange shop in town that serves the same purpose, although of course you have to take the phone out to answer it!

All I can say is well done HTC! I'm very pleased!

Firstly I would like to point out that I have only had this device for 2 days, but WOW! what a lovely bit of kit this is. Extremely easy to use once you get your head around the android OS, and fully customisable to your personal requirements. I mainly used to use my mobile for texting so when deciding which phone to buy this time I was a little worried how I would find a touch screen phone, especially after trying a few of my collegues mobiles with capacative screens as they seemed rather flighty and random as regards text imput. With this in mind I chose to go down the resistive screen route and chose this lovely HTC Tattoo, and how pleased am I, texting is a dream, the contacts list is intuitive, calling is simple, and connecting to the internet and wi-fi and absolute doddle. Email set up was just as easy as long as you have your POP settings from your provider and notifications come through instantly.

This device also supports A GPRS which means it can also be used as a Sat Nav, I was a little concerned at first that the screen would not be large enough but no worries there it's fine. Loads of useful apps are included with the device, but plenty more are available from Google android market, to download, most of which are free. The 7 home screens hold your shortcuts and apps so that everything you use frequently is right at your fingertips e.g. My main screen has the time and weather app and shortcuts to messages, contacts, browser and camera, and subsequent screens have an app for bookmarks which are shown as thumbprints, another has a photoviewer and calender etc,. If I had one niggle it's the camera, it's not wonderful, but as I don't use phone cameras much - preferring my canon, which goes everywhere with me - this is not an issue for me.

Summing up this is a brilliant device which brings a whole new dimention to the mobile phone and a whole lot of fun - HTC not just giving the user a fully customisable user interface but also provide a service to customise the outside too, as you can buy covers that have been pre-designed or get this! Design your own - how cool is that! It's a fab little device that will change your whole perception of mobile phones forever....

The worst phone I have experienced. HTC has tried to outdo the iphone but without understanding its functionality and the result is a complete mess. Leaving aside its hefty weight, these are the worst features:

a) When receiving an incoming call you need to slide a green "toutch bar" to the right or left, then press "accept" or "reject". If you get it slightly wrong, or don't look at the phone while doing it, the call is rejected. I have had six incoming (!) calls "rejected" this way, one after the other...

b) To call, you need to press a button at the top to turn on, then another button on the bottom to get the dial pad, then dial. Two more key presses than you'd need on "normal" phone.

c) You can dial numbers accidentally just by your finger brushing the surface when putting the phone down on your desk. This has happened several times.



The list goes on and on. I strongly recommend you avoid this phone at all costs.

After having this phone for around 4 months, I think its time to write a review, this was my first touchscreen phone, so after the initial excitement of touching the screen and the phone reacting subsided, I was left with a mediocre piece of hardware.



Windows Mobile 6.1 does not help the phone in any way shape or form, its slow and tends to freeze. Also, when using the very nice keypad to write a text or email, the signal tends to go, after you try sending the text, your left with a message saying the text cannot be sent - now any other phone, this isn't a problem because as soon as the signal has returned, the text message is sent automatically, with this phone, it is not the case, you must either re-write what you have previously written or forward the text, which equals alot of messing around with options.



The ringing tone and message tone aren't anything spectacular either, when playing music back, it seems louder than the ringtone, I have missed many calls because of this, 9/10 I only get the call because the phone vibrates. The alarm is also the same, a second of a beep 3 or 4 times and then it automatically selects snooze - not good for the heavy sleepers.



The phone does come with 3-4 pretty good apps, Youtube being the best - so long as your connected to mobile internet or a decent wi-fi service. Bluetooth is also included but seems quite slow for some reason.



I've given this a 6/10 as I'm finding it hard to write about any good points about the phone.

This is a pretty impressive albeit expensive bit of kit. It looks and feels well built and exudes quality. The screen is excellent and the keyboard a great benefit if you dont like using the stylus. The range of software and power user functionality is very good indeed.

However it is very bulky and heavy and as a phone handset it is rubbish. Whenever I am making calls I have difficultyu hearing and being heard even in strong reception areas. In particular if you move or tilt the handset away from your mouth to any degree you become effectively disconnected.

If you need the power of Windows Mobile in an industrial strength set you can't do better but if you just want great media capabilities, internet access and a good phone look elsewhere.

Overall this is definitely a good device. Lovely big touchscreen, great hardware, nice physical keyboard. TouchFlo 3D looks fantastic, and is well designed software.



Only two niggles are that the screen is very reflective so hard to view in bright light, and the software is a bit rough around the edges and crashes occasionally. Perhaps also a little expensive.



Overall good, 4 stars.

You can't rely on the device to be working at the end of the day because the battery performance is poor and who expects to be able to keep a mobile device on charge every day. A fully charged battery may just about last one day if you just have the thing on stand by all day, but what's the point of having such a mobile device unless you are going to make a lot of use of it during the day in which case you end up fretting the battery is going to go flat when you may really need it and you are forced to stop using it to conserve the remaining battery life.

Although it has features such as the two camera's, google maps and GPS. In daylight you cannot see the screen so this defeats making good use of it outside, you have to hold it under some shade outdoors during the daytime to be able to make out anything on the screen. Even making a phone call in daylight is difficult because the keyboard is on the touch screen which you can't see. The camera's have no flash so this is not much use outdoors at night or anywhere not well lit and outdoors during the day you can't see what the camera is looking at because you can't see the display.

Often the touch screen doesn't respond in the expected way and you have to keep using the back button to undo a selection you didn't want and try again to select what you did want, but maybe this is because I fitted the clear plastic protection cover over the display, when this is worn out I intend to use the device without a cover but maybe then the screen gets scratched.

When using email, a browser or other Internet app if you can connect to a wifi it shouldn't use the phone network and thereby run up costs but sometimes even when you have a working wifi connection the device chooses without warning to make a data connection via the phone network. Ouch! You can disable the phone connection quite easily but then you aren't going to know if you've missed a call.

Some of the features are cool and maybe I need to install some more apps to appreciate it better but overall I wish I'd spent my money on something else because it ain't cheap.

Like most of the other reviews for the Touch Diamond 2 I rate this phone highly when it comes to styling and features, but if you are intending to buy this phone there is one pretty major drawback you should be aware of - battery performance. Without using any of the features like GPS or Wireless this phone needs a recharge within 12 hours. In the early days of mobile phones when the size of the phone was a brick the power supply was in a shoulder bag. Well, the size of the phone may have shrunk but the need for the power supply in a shoulder bag remains. This phone uses battery power like a Land Rover drinks petrol.



I challenged HTC about why the battery performance was so bad and why I don't get anything like it's quoted standby figures and I was told it was "normal" for this type of phone and the Android phones are the same.



Battery performance aside this is a fantastic phone and you won't be disappointed - as long as you don't venture too far from a main power outlet so remember to pack a power cable in your bag and car!!

The phone itself is good, not absolutely amazing, but good. Windows Mobile 6.1 however has its problems and looks pretty ugly. The TouchFlo 3D interface that covers a lot of the windows mobile interface looks nice but sometimes can be a little bit slow. This was my first smart phone and also my first touch screen phone so its taking quite a bit of getting used to - its nice to have features like outlook email on it but to be honest I am finding that there is not much that I want to do on it that I couldnt do on any 'normal' phone.

Fantastic phone. Everything I need and some! Very easy to use and Touch Flo is a great front-end for Windows Mobile 6.1. Works fine with TomTom 7 using the internal GPS receiver.

Lot's of on-phone memory for apps and utilities, coupled with a fast processor.

Take a look at spb Mobile Shell 3, as it's an even better front-end than Touch Flo - I've added a copy onto my Diamond 2 and it makes it into a real iPhone beater.

This has replaced my iPaq HX4700 and Nokia N73 and is better than both. Thoroughly recommended.

I don't like Windows as an operating system, not on a PC, and not on a phone. But so far I've found that the only phones which meet with my requirements have been Windows based mobiles - though that may well change with the meteoric rise of both the i-Phone and the impressive Android operating system.



After using the first MDA Diamond for a year, it was time for a change. I had a brief spell with a Samsung Tocco but realised that I missed many of the functions of the MDA and naturally decided on the second generation of the Diamond. Lesser smartphones collapse under the weight of the cumbersome operating system, but the MDA Diamond II transcends it by hiding it behind it's own fancy user interface - TouchFlo 3D.



TouchFlo worked well on the original Diamond, but it felt bolted on and I found that after a while it stuttered a bit and lost responsiveness. The Diamond II must have some memory improvements or some pretty nifty ways to improve efficiency because TouchFlo maintains a good level of responsiveness and as well as cutting the mustard in terms of functionality - it looks pretty sexy. Sliding your grubby digits across the screen to create fingerprints on the glossy exterior never looked so good as the 3D menus smoothly animate and scroll at the pace you want them to. You don't have to use the stylus anymore as the significantly bigger screen with improve resolution (WVGA rather than plain old VGA) means you have bigger buttons and wider menu bars - of course the stylus is still there but you won't need to bring it out anywhere near so frequently.



My main problems with the first Diamond were it's lag in responsiveness and the disappointing way it overlooked it's self orientating screen. Well, as I've already mentioned - the second version of this phone is quicker and although it does start to slow down once several applications are active simultaneously, it's not as noticeable and it handles more before it gets to that stage. The first MDA also had an impressive rotating display - but it was woefully underused, in fact it was quite possible to own the phone for a year and never even realise it had the functionality! This has been addressed in version two though and now when composing e-mails or text messages I can hold the phone 'landscape' and the screen rotates. This gives you a larger on-screen keyboard and whereas texting whilst on the bus, or as a passenger in a car was a nightmare before as any little movement had you tapping the wrong key with your stylus - now you can type away with ease! That's a big bonus for me and was the main reason I considered this phone over one with a dedicated QWERTY keyboard.



The addition of a MicroSD card slot is a welcome feature. After owning several MDA smartphones I simply assumed that the original Diamond would accommodate a memory card and took the phone to pieces looking for the slot before it dawned on me that there was nowhere to slot my 2 Gig beasty (2 gig was pretty impressive then!). Now I can enjoy all my media files on the move by popping them all on a MicroSD card, and it can be swapped between devices when necessary. I actually use a MAC for home use and find it far easier to drag and drop files to a memory card rather than beaming via bluetooth or linking up via cable.



I do however use a cable when I'm syncing with my works laptop. Synchronising with Outlook is where I have to reluctantly admit that Windows excels; all my contacts were on Outlook and after connecting the cable and using ActiveSync I had all those contacts on my new phone within a few minutes. My appointments and reminders were all present and correct too. Job done!



In a nutshell: The MDA Diamond was a very good phone, and instead of making any radical changes HTC have tweaked it and worked on the niggles to come up with a faster newer model. If you already have a Diamond and move to a Diamond II then the small changes will make a big difference. For me it's like a totally different phone as I'm now happy to use TouchFlo, which means the phone looks and handles very differently - and at times I even forget that Windows is on there! Surely it's only a matter of time before HTC release a phone with their own TouchFlo inspired Operating System.
